James River Crossing
Horizontal Directional Drilling
Huxted Trenchless performed the intersect HDD installation of approximately 5,700 LF of 42-inch DR 11 HDPE to serve as a new HRSD force main beneath the James River. Huxted’s scope included drilling and intersecting the pilot bores, reaming the completed bore to approximately 54 inches, and the final pullback and installation of the 42-inch product pipe.
The project presented significant engineering and construction challenges, including the transition from the originally proposed water-to-water HDD configuration to a more complex land-to-land intersect drill. Supporting work included approximately 300 LF of 66-inch casing installed within a cofferdam and approximately 600 LF of casing supported on temporary “goal posts” outside the main river channel.
