South Hillsborough Pipeline
Horizontal Directional Drilling, Microtunneling
The Tampa Bay Water South Hillsborough Pipeline consists of approximately 26 miles of 42-inch to 60-inch water transmission main extending through rapidly developing urban corridors in Brandon and Riverview, Florida.
As part of this critical infrastructure improvement, Huxted Trenchless is completing two environmentally sensitive horizontal directional drilling (HDD) crossings beneath Fishhawk Creek and Little Fishhawk Creek along Fishhawk Boulevard in Riverview. The 2,100-foot and 2,500-foot drills install 48-inch HDPE SDR 11 pipe through constantly changing ground conditions, and their designs required tight vertical radii as low as 1,650 feet and a horizontal radius of 1,400 feet.
Huxted is also delivering 15 microtunnel installations totaling 5,500 feet of 54-inch, 72-inch, and 73.5-inch Permalok steel casing beneath major roadways, railroad crossings, and significant water bodies, while working in densely populated neighborhoods and heavily congested utility corridors. The project includes 30 jacking and receiving shafts built with varying support-of-excavation methods (secant pile, sheet pile, and slide rail). Each tunnel includes installation of the steel water main carrier pipe and riser pipe, as necessary.
